Who is Captain Marvin in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, The Valley of Fear?

Captain Marvin is the newest member of the Iron and Coal Police. Initially, he seems to be an enemy of McMurdo. It is later revealed, however, that he is aware of McMurdo's true identity as a Pinkerton agent.
