One example of allusion can be seen in Holmes' description of Watson's intelligence as "Machiavellian" ( pg. 167). This description directly refers to the stereotypical view of Niccolo Machiavelli's political philosophy, allluding to Watson as cold, calculating, and ruthless in his rationale.
