In short, Chapter Two introduces the reader to Annie's new house and describes the increasing tensions in the community. The Nazis gather the Jewish men and transport them to a camp called Mauthausen. Annie's father, who was home at the time of the arrests, tries to get across the border to Switzerland but is unable. The Jews are required to wear a star on their clothing for identification, and they are later forced to relocate in German work camps.

In spring of 1942, there are rumors that the war will soon be over. The reality, however, is that women are taken to the work camps as well. Annie's mother becomes sick anbd is hospitalized, her family cannot visit because they are Jews. Annie's father looks for places to hide his family.
