One of the primary signifiers of the upper classes and those more connected to British culture is the clothing worn by the characters. Bakha is always wearing his khaki uniform except when he has the opportunity to put on the threadbare British clothing he has scrounged together his money to purchase. He feels like a better version of himself when he is dressed like the British, highlighting their imperial influence in India.
