Forbidden love is a rtecurring idea. There are two examples of forbidden love in the tale of a family in a coal mining area of West Virginia. The first is the love story between Dillon Freeman and Rachel Honaker. Dillon and Rachel are first cousins. Dillon is a reckless sort and the kind of fellow who does not live his life based on the value of others. He falls in love with his first cousin, Rachel, when he is fourteen and she is sixteen and he loves her for the rest of his life. He is ready to tell the world but Rachel is more influenced by societal mores and the opinions of others and never allows the relationship to fully develop.
