Over the course of the story, the reader comes to the realization that the Duke is suffering from mental deterioration. When he studies the phrenological map, the Duke imagines that the orderly mental compartments dissolve and violent anarchy ensues..... this occurrence metaphorically represents is happening in his own mind.
