Family is an important theme in this story. From the beginning of the book, there is the concern for Louis. The male and female swan care for their little ones. They are particularly concerned about Louis. The father swan will do whatever he can to help his son. The swan will even steal to help him. Even though it makes the father feel bad to steal, he puts Louis first.
