Because readers are seeing everything through the eyes of Percy Jackson, readers are experiencing the world through the mind of a teenager. Rick Riordan does an excellent job of this through Percy’s inner monologue. Percy will frequently think or speak in very simple terms, relating everything to what you would expect a young teenager to have experienced. He tends to use teenage slang as well, such as referring to people as dudes. He often comes up with childish nicknames for people and monsters. Sometimes this is intentional, but other times it is also a result of his dyslexia coming into play when he initially misreads something.
