What do you think are the other characters’ thoughts of Gen?

Initially, the group doesn't appreviate Gen. They insult him, call him names.... "useful sort of tool," and "O scum of the gutter." Over the course of the novel, however, Gen gains his fellow travelers' respect, and the magus even comes to care about his welfare.
