Why does Prospero have to take his "magic garment "off before he can tell Miranda her history?

In essence, he doesn't really need to take it off. He takes the garment off to show that the source of his magic is through the garment. In taking off the robe, he is in his own way letting Miranda know that his words are the truth.... that he isn't telling her a fantasy.
