We finally get to figure out what's up with Miranda and Prospero. Really this is Shakespeare filling in backstory for the reader. Prospero was Duke of Milan and Miranda a princess forced into exile on this island:

By foul play, as thou sayst, were we heaved thence,But blessedly holp hither.

Uncle Antonio is the villain here. Now the reader can truly appreciate the themes of revenge, mercy and reconciliation.
