In title, he is the Duke of Milan, living in exile on a remote island. During his exile he's become a powerful magician that loves books, and his daughter, Miranda. He uses his magic to manipulate people, even the elements, for his own goals. However, in the end, he realizes that dedicating all of his time and attention on his magic has isolated him from society and his family, whereupon he repents and becomes a nice guy.
