Gonzalo is an honest and trusted advisor to King Alonso of Naples. In I.ii. 160-68, we learn that twelve years ago, when Prospero was usurped and he and his daughter, Miranda, were set adrift at sea, Gonzalo took pity on the two of them, supplying them not only with the food and water necessary to survive, but also with those things that make life easier. He is generally considered to be a man of integrity.
