The post-central gyrus is a region of the brain located towards the back of the cortex. The post-central gyrus can essentially act as a map of the body, with certain regions of the post-central gyrus receiving information from the nerves of a specific part of the body. The size of the region of the post-central gyrus that represents a specific body part is proportional to the number of nerves that body part contains, rather than its size. Ramachandran determined that phantom limbs occur when the post-central gyrus region associated with a limb that has been lost continues to transmit pain signal.
