Gender roles is a big theme in this play. Katherine, the "shrew", is not the submissive courtly woman expected in this era. She is consistently clever, strong-willed and vibrant, an attractive contrast to her sister Bianca. Katherine is juxtaposed with Petruchio who represents the standard sexist male at this time.
