The setting is an interesting on in The Sun Also Rises by Hemmingway because it serves to underscore the sentiment of an entire post-war generation. The main characters move around the European continents freely and at will and whim, seemingly without anyplace that they feel at home. The ex-pats that lived abroad during this time had become very disenchanted with the US and so were living in Europe at the time. The war had deeply depressed and disillusioned this generation as far as the future and their role in it. This is definitely reflected in the setting of this novel.
