Jerome's fascination with Shelley represents his conservative and cultured upbringing, as well as his presumed intellectual entitlements. Jerome has his wealthy mother drop off his book collection at the Trentham house, mostly so he can read his Shelley collections. Maria chides him one day, saying that his love for Shelley symbolizes his conservative side. Jerome takes offense to this, mainly because Jerome is insecure about his wealthy upbringing, and wants to be seen as working class, like Ugo.
