What are the conditions and concequences of Meursault alienating himself?

Meursault ends up in prison awaiting death because he has ceased to care about his life. He sees himself as part of the inevitable passage of time and human experience. To Meursault, the world will not change if he lives or dies. The absurdity of life has no explanation and his life is part of that absurdity.
