Gods represent a reckoning with fate in the book. Amisha, Jaya, and Amit all pray to the gods in order to intervene with their fates. Although gods connote religious fate, these destinies are not necessarily imposed by divinity; Amisha’s fate is written by society, Jaya’s is written by her biology, and Amit’s is written by economic reality. The gods represent a channel for the characters to direct these challenges to their own fate.
