Famous artist, Michelangelo, spent many years in Florence. Although he often traveled to other cities to work, Florence was his birthplace and home. The de Medicis were Michelangelos' most prominent patrons. In addition to his religious works, Michelangelo was also commissioned to do the famous de Medici tombs for Cosimo.
