Trust is another theme in the book. In Viv's desire to find the love she missed out on as a child, she trusts people too quickly and too much. Viv trusts Derek and believes his intentions toward her are honorable. However, Derek is interested in Viv only for a sexual relationship. Viv swears to not allow her heart to be broken again, but then comes to trust her boss, Kurt Rainer. Viv believes Kurt is a good man who will take care of her, perhaps even marrying her should she become pregnant. However, when it happens, Kurt sends her off on her own to have an abortion.
