Because most of “The Sport of Kings” focuses on the Forge family, and because the Forge family takes a lot of pride in their rigorous self-education, many of the characters speak in exceptionally formal and intricate ways. This is particularly evident in the first chapter, “The Strange Family of Things,” as if to reflect John Henry’s personal values of being thoroughly, formally education.
