Montgomery narrates in first and third person, constituting the narrator as well as a main character. Though her writing is largely descriptive and documentarian, it is also implicitly directed towards the reader. From her experience and observation, Montgomery has crafted a narrative and a progression, oriented towards the reader’s experience. Her choices of selection, sequencing, and supplementation of these experiences and observations bring this effect. Another divergence from the author’s description and documentation is her stream of consciousness writing. Montgomery intersperses her inner thoughts and experiences in the form in which they arise. As the narrative centers around Montgomery’s exploration driven by her own curiosity, she has a high level of involvement, making the writing personal in perspective. The many anecdotes from Montgomery’s own life, her friends’ experiences, as well as the aquarium community’s lives add to this personal angle.
