What leads to Roland's death in The Song of Roland?

Roland is bringing up the rear guard in a battle for Charlemagne. It goes badly, but in one last heroic act Roland blows the horn to alert the emperor. Roland blows so hard that his temples burst. He dies a glorious martyr's death, and saints take his soul straight to Paradise.
