The Civil War impacted the protagonist by making him a hardened soldier, both efficient and automatic in his actions. The war also taught him to take care of himself, to doctor his own wounds..... to mentally black out pain. Unfortunately, what the war didn't teach him, he learned all too thoroughly on his own..... he allowed himself to experience fear, to think about the enemy as human.... to allow himself curiosity, but only for a moment. When he realizes the enemy sniper he killed was his own brother, and that he had ended his life, the sniper quickly turns his emotional side off again..... and goes onto to act as what he's become.... a soldier.
