Scientists knew that fossils could be dated by the layer of rocks in which they were discovered. For example, dinosaur bones were placed in the Mesozoic era by virtue of the rock layers they were found in while the fossils of mastodons and similar creatures were found closer to the surface of the earth than were dinosaurs. Those animals closer to the surface lived fewer eons ago than did those buried in deeper layers.
