One major theme in the novel, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, is that of religion, specifically, the conflicts Henry has with the Church in attempting to attain what he believes is his right as a monarch. Henry works the Catholic church and fails.... they will not grant his divorce from Katherine of Aragon, and he breaks all ties. Note, Henry's excommunication effects his people, his religious advisors, and creates major tension during his reign. We sometimes become so engrossed in his marriages that we forget the repurcussions that were felt throughout his kingdom.
