How does the California gold rush play into the development of the plot?

Right now I have the effects on the character motives and greed.

The California Gold Rush and the influx of prospectors moves the plot because the prospector's themselves create numerous obstacles along the way. As a result, Eli and Charlie become embroiled in murder and thievery, and they become the objects of deception.
