The Super Bowl is a symbol of American culture as a fusion of consumerism, machismo culture, militarism and patriotism. The Super Bowl is a modern tradition in America that brings people together and represents many aspects of American society. In the novel, the Super Bowl is the reason for the gathering even though most of the characters have little interest in the game. Max hopes to make money from it and Diane makes fun of all of the commercials and corporate sponsorships. The yearly event is presented as a kind of ritual of American life.
