Why is the absence of the rifle so terrible for Matt?

The rifle is his tool for hunting and Matt is accustomed to eating meat often, perhaps even every day. In addition, he recognizes that the rifle is his protection against danger--intuders or large, threatening animals. Without the gun, he would have neither the meat or the protection.
