Why did Elizabeth choose to create an affair between Matt and Attean in the Signs Of The Beaver?

Matt is Attean's teacher. Attean's grandfather believed that it was important for him to learn the ways of the white man. With all the changes, he felt that there was more for Attean to learn than he, himself, could teach him.
