One of the facets of the Torrence family that allows it to plays so easily into the wills of the hotel is the recent trouble that Jack and Wendy have had. Wendy hopes that the time alone will give them a chance to reconnect as a family. She feels positive enough about her relationship with Jack to go with him into isolation because he has given up drinking, even though Wendy knows his abstinence has not been easy. Jack, on the other hand, probably doesn’t realize how close his marriage came to ending because of his alcoholism.
