Robert Nilsson is Karl's younger brother. He traveled to America with his brother and sister-in-law to make a new life for himself. Robert's dreams, however, are different. He doesn't want to farm, but rather, wants to go to California in the dreams of striking it rich. Robert convinces his best friend, Arvid, to go with him to California, and Arvid dies on the journey. Later, his employer dies as well. After a number of years, Robert becomes ill and returns home. He presents Karl with a large stack of bills, not realizing that the money is fake. In the end, Robert dies in the woods near his brother's farm and is the first to be buried in the newly-consecrated cemetery near Lake Ki-Chi-Saga.
