Johan Nilsson is Karl and Kristina's oldest son. When he accompanies his father on a short trip, a storm blows up. Knowing that his son's life is in danger, Karl slaughters an ox, hollows out its belly, and puts Johan inside. Thus, he was protected from the cold until Karl could return with help.
