There are two important aspects of setting to consider here. The first is the physical environment of the town of Twin Peaks. While it is never described in extensive detail (Laura has, after all, lived there all her life and has no real reason to describe the place to herself), there are enough passing glimpses to give a sense of smallness, isolation from other large centers, and of a closeness to nature. Here again, as discussed in "Themes" above, the reader can perceive the idea of duality - civilization (the town) vs. nature (the woods), a duality that reflects several of the core duality's at work in the experience of the central character.
