Percy Jackson is the main character and protagonist in the novel.

Percy is short for Perseus. He is in the seventh grade. His mother is a human, and his father is Poseidon of the sea. Percy is described as intelligent.... an average child, who is regularly assailed by monsters and worries of a prophecy that he knows concerns him in some way but he is not sure how. Much of the prophecy is kept from Percy, and this makes him worried more than what the prophecy could say. While Percy himself is not above making mistakes, he makes decisions based upon what believes is right.
