Identity is an important idea in this story. There are many characters with identities that might make them feel like one of a minority, or someone whom others ignore. Antsy is an Italian-American, Ira is Jewish, the Schwa suffers from the Schwa effect, Lexie is handicapped, and Crawley is old. Antsy's mother and the Schwa's mother are housewives who wonder where their own identity ends and their family's begins. Most of these people also struggle with feelings of being invisible, and with a need to make others pay attention to them.
