Sophie represents loneliness and a need to belong. From the beginning of the novel, she admits to Agatha that she is only good because of her friendship with Agatha. Her interaction with her father and future step-family further proves how she does not belong. In the School for Good and Evil, Sophie feels forced to attack Tedros and Agatha to keep her best friend for herself. Even as Filip, she bonds with Tedros and relies on him for friendship. That is why Agatha’s decision to choose Tedros over Sophie devastates her later. Sophie is willing to give herself up to the School Master: the only person she perceives will make her feel like she belongs.
