Snakes represent secrecy and cunning. It is the symbol that replaces the black swan for the School of Boys. Twice in the novel are Sophie and Agatha attacked by large snakes sneaking up on them. The two are freed by magic both times. Both Sophie and Agatha a snakeskin cape to sneak around the school. Sophie uses it to stop Agatha from kissing Tedros, and Agatha uses it to hide herself while Sophie infiltrates the School for Boys.
