Why is it Dimmesdale's job to try and figure out who the father of the baby is? How does this demonstrate irony?

Dimmesdale defends Hester and protects Pearl from being taken away from Hester. The job of finding the father is given to Dimmesdale. The irony is of course that Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl.
