How does Pearl save Hester from Satan?

Evidence: “Had they taken her [Pearl] from me, I would willingly have gone with thee into the forest, and signed my name in the Black Man’s book too, and that with mine own blood!” (Chapter 8)

Pearl represents, to Hester, purity of real love: God's love. Pearl represents a departure from the stifling hypocrisy of Puritan society. Pearl is wild and good. She keeps Hester grounded from the forces that would destroy her.
