In The Scarlet Ibis, why is Doodle an important character?

He is the 'foil' to his brother. His brother is strong, healthy, headstrong, proud, and quick to anger. He does not take notice of nature, but rather lords over it. Doodle is exactly the opposite, and eventually his death changes his brother's perspectives.
