The wilderness and the natural elements play a central role in this memoir. Ray and Moth often stop to marvel at the beauty of the natural sights they see, ranging from cliffs to sparkling ocean to thick woods. They also feel, at times, that the natural world is almighty and powerful, and they must fight to survive the elements and the terrain when the weather is tough, and the trail becomes difficult.
