During the winter, after a Ray and Moth walk all the way from Minehead at the northeast end of the path past Land’s End at the western tip and along the southern coast to Polruan, the temperatures drop, and they decide they must find shelter for the winter. They decide to accept their old school friend Polly’s offer of a small shed on her land that used to be meat-cutting room. It requires plastering, and this becomes Moth’s daily work while they are staying there. They lose their sense of purpose, Moth’s health rapidly deteriorates, and they suffer from depression in this setting.
