Will is surprised about Halt's weapon training because they don't use large weapons. There aren't any swords or battle axes. Instead there are longbows and knives. Halt tells him that the biggest weapon that a Ranger has is stealth and silence and the ability to avoid a fight all together. Weapons are a last resort, only.
