The novel's main conflict can be found in Horace and Will's struggle to decide exactly who they are, and what path they want to take once released from the Baron's care. Though the boys are very different, they are both orphans, and they have both been raised in the Baron's fief. Now that they ar fifteen, each of the boys must choose a path to take, an occupation in which to be apprenticed. Horace and Will will struggle with their choices, and for the first time, they will have to deal with their choices without the support of the other.
