Grisham gives exposition in this first four chapters of the novel. He tells the stories of Zola, Mark and Todd’s struggles with their families as well as the troubles they are facing in law school. Also in these four chapters Grisham has Gordy, the character who kills himself, tell Zola, Mark and Todd what he believes Rackley, the partial owner of the school they attend, has done to scam them out of money and leave them with no jobs.
