One major theme in the novel, although understated, is religion. Radcliffe uses specific characters to illustrate the ways in which religion is seen in a negative light because of the actions of people.... some who are deceitful, cruel, and manipulative. She also addresses this theme in the ways in which religion is an important aspect of people's lives. Adeline's experiences do not affect her faith in God, nor do they change the way in which she seeks God's guidance in her life. In leaving the abbey, Adeline finds the truth of Christianity in the character of La Luc, who is portrayed as a true Christian and shepherd of his flock.
