On the surface, mother is the antagonist in the story but the larger theme is the disease of greed. Lawrence uses greed as a psychological and even metaphysical disease that infects the house as well as the people in it. Mother is most affected by the insatiable desire to buy things. She finds little joy in it but, like a drug, she cannot stop it.
