Problems addressed in the story, The Rocking Horse Winner, that continue to plague society include gambling (giving up what you have in the hopes you will win, be lucky), the need children have and their desire to gain their parents' approval, attention, and love (particularly in a world where one parent families are prevalent, and in families with two parents, both are working), and materialism..... never being satisfied whith what we have..... the constant desire to have more.
